Text on a Dark Site

Posted on Aug 29, 2009 in Articles

Dark sites have become very popular, and there are a few tips that should be kept in mind when working with black or near-black backgrounds with often white text.

1. White is not always Wonderful.

Just because black text works on a white background doesn’t mean white text works on a black background. The high contrast can be an eyesore, and it’s often better to use a light gray text than a white text on a black background.

With high-power monitors, it can be much easier to read and work with light gray on a black or dark background than white.

2. Blocks of text are Bad.

While it can be a minor annoyance to read thick walls of text on a light background, it’s simply impossible on a dark layout.

The white text just becomes a big blur, and is the easiest way to scare people away from a website.

If you’re using a dark layout, make sure to break up your text into readable sections.

3. Color Carefully

When applied well, colors in text can be fantastic. Popular colors for dark layouts in text as highlights and/or hyperlinks range from pink to light blues even.

The colors can really bring out certain words or sentences, but don’t overuse them, as they’ll quickly kill any success when overdone.

When applied tastefully, the colors can easily work with both images and text.
