How to Design a Flower Logo

Posted on Aug 19, 2009 in Tutorials

Another easy tutorial on making a simple logo, this one focuses on an simple flower vector. We will be working on pen tool techniques to draw out a flower with Photoshop.

Unless otherwise noted, each step should be a new layer, for organizational and backtracking purposes.

Step 1.

First, use the pen paths tool to draw a slightly curved line, and then bring the next point around to a point near the top. Follow it down and curve it down near the base again. It doesn’t have to be perfect, because it’s a flower stem, after all.Step 1Step 2.

Now just complete the selection with the pen tool, and right click and choose “Make Selection.” After this, fill it with a green stem color.

Step-2Step 3.

Now that the stem is all done, we can add a leaf. Use the pen tool to create a leaf, but remember that a leaf is usually bent, and it’s from the side view. Leaves always face up, so it should be rather skinny from this view.

Step-3Step 4.

Now repeat the process with the selection, and fill it with the same color as the stem.

Once that’s done, we can create a crease in the leaf. Take the pen tool, and reach far beyond the leaf. This will make it so that we can trace back along a similar arc for a nice, thin crease.

Step-4Step 5.

Now we need to make another selection and fill it, with the background color, which is white. If we are using a transparent logo, you can use the previous layer and delete or erase what’s inside the selection.

Step-5Step 6.

With the flower stem and leaf completed, we can start with the center of the actual flower. Use a bright, vibrant color, and fill in an oval shape. Since we’re aiming for a nice, hand-drawn effect here, try to make it an oval or even a misshaped oval, as it fits nicely with the flower stem.

After you’ve drawn it out, right click the layer and choose “Blending Options.” And add a stroke to the layer in the background color. It separates the colors.

If you’re using a transparent background, control+click on the new flower dot to get its selection, and choose Select -> Modify -> Expand and choose a decent amount (For this tutorial and size, I used a 3 pixel stroke. Then go back to the stem layer and delete from that selection.

Step-6Step 7.

Now use the pen tool to make some flower petal shapes. It’s as easy as just making a point in or close to the dot, then another where you want it to end, and connecting them back. Then drag your cursor around to change the shape.

Make this layer beneath the dot so that the stroke covers it, or for a transparent background, repeat the selecting, expanding, and deleting process.

Step-7Step 8.

For the rest of the petals, copy the process around the flower, and try to keep a nice perspective as if you were looking at the flower from a specific direction. Most of my upper petals are larger, and the lower petals are smaller.

Step-8There we have it; all done!
